HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the original paperwork, which quotes the serial number on the case back, we can accurately date this watch to being sold in November 1963. The Royal Grasp name was trademarks by Favre-Leuba in 1961, and we also found an advert credited to 1962 which all fits nicely.
CONDITION
To get a full set like this in any watch of this period is rare, and getting rarer. But to focus on the watch itself first, the Royal Grasp uses Favre-Leuba’s 1152 21 jewel movement. The automatic winding mechanism was developed with Doxa, Eberhard, Girard-Perregaux, and Zodiac, and therefore parts can be found if needed (none are needed currently – it is running nicely). The watch also features a calendar with semi quick set date, again in fully working condition. This is all protected by a 20 micron gold plated case with screw down case back. The bezel does have some lifting of the gold plate, which is the worse part of wear on the entire watch. The original dial looks clean in most lights, but you can see some light patina with a loupe. The hands also have light tarnishing. The bracelet is full length and has a buckle type fixing rather than removeable links. Unsurprisingly for a 60 year old gold plated bracelet there is wear evident, but this is the original part with signed keeper. The leather strap is also original with some wear, but could be swapped for a new leather strap easily – the 20mm end pieces are the critical part here, and any 16mm strap could fit. The buckle is also signed which is unusual on a watch of this period – The Royal Grasp must have been a fairly high up in their model range.
