A manual wind men’s Certina Waterking from the 1960’s is an undervalued thing, at least in the UK. Model reference 7102 084
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1963.
CONDITION
The model number of a Certina can tell you a few extra details, if you know what to look for. The first two digits, 71 in this case, correspond to the movement fitted. In this case it should be and is a calibre 28-16 from Certina, manual winding with 17 jewels. The second two digits tell you the case material, which in this watch is chrome plated. When you compare the watch tot he case back and these things match the chances that the watch case back has been swapped in minimal, so we can be quite confident on the year made. The movement is well made and finished, and is all working well. The case has a few marks, most noticeably to the bottom of the case sides. These are very difficult to see when on the wrist. The dial and hands are good for the age, bordering onto very good. The signed crown isn’t showing much wear, and as this part would be turned every day the watch was worn it could be this Waterking has had an easy life. The tan leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. This is easily done as the watch has drilled lugs.
