This men’s stainless steel Universal Geneve has the in house movement and is in superb condition. Manual wind movement.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1961.
CONDITION
Universal Geneve were serious competitors in the world of watchmaking, making very sought after watches such as the Tri-Compax, Polerouter and Nina Rindt chronograph. They were also marketed in the US by the same Henri Stern company that sold Patek Philippe, and have been described as a poor man’s Patek. It is more realistic to see than as rivals to Omega and Longines of this period. There is a good article here on the history of Universal Geneve.
This watch has been worn and enjoyed, but you would not think it has been worn much. The signed crown is original, and the ridges are still crisp – if the watch had been worn a lot the crown would be worn smooth or possibly replaced. The all stainless steel case has a screw down case back, which is great at keeping out dirt as well as water, and this might explain why the original dial is in such good condition. Dials with numbers at the quarters are often referred to as Explorer dials, like the Rolex Explorer. Inside is a the caliber 1106, an in house design shared with Movado. It is very clean, nicely finished and running well. The leather strap is new and can be swapped for a black leather if preferred. You will have to search for a long time to find an example as clean and presentable as problem.
