With the Pellaton automatic system, this men’s IWC Automatic watch will appeal both technically and aesthetically.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1961. This movement was only available between 1958 and 1963.
CONDITION
Three handed watches like this are sometimes called Calatrava style, after the Patek Philippe that defined the genre. But if you wanted a Patek Philippe in steel and 35mm case size, something like reference 3843, then you would be lucky to pay less that £20,000. Yes, the Patek is better finished – it was always more expensive – but this IWC gives you a lot of the same experience at a much lower price point. The off white dial may have had an older repaint and has just light patina. The three piece stainless steel case again has only light marks but it looks sharp – often polished cases lose those crisp edges so it is a good thing. Then inside you get IWC calibre 853, featuring the Pellaton winding mechanism sometimes known as magic fingers. It is all running well and a treat to wind, but the crown might be a replacement. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
