A solid gold vintage Rolex that is in the famous Oyster case, with the automatic movement. Highly desirable! Model reference 6564.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case between the bottom lugs we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1959. Between the top lugs is the model code 6564, just as it should be.
CONDITION
Around 1958 Rolex changed their logo slightly, and instead of printing their logo on the dial they had a slightly bolder applied logo, just like this watch has. If this watch had had a replacement dial at any point this small detail would have been lost. This example is different to the 1959 Datejust we also currently have, in that it is 2mm smaller, has no date complication, the case is solid 9k gold rather than steel and the price is much cheaper. This sounds odd that gold is cheaper than steel, but the current fashion is for steel and supply and demand dictates prices. The case has not been engraved, and unusually is stamped RW Co, meaning the case was made by Rolex and imported. It was more normal to have cases made in England and to import the movement to avoid excessive import duty on gold watches, but this was all made by Rolex. The case also shows it was assayed in Glasgow in 1959, further attesting to the full made in Switzerland attribution. The screw down case back reveals a beautifully finished Rolex calibre 1066, adjusted to five positions and temperatures. This was as good as their retail movements got (if you are really wealthy or lucky you might find a movement marked Kew – buy it if you do, as these were competition watches.). The signed screw down crown works perfectly too. The watch is running well, the leather strap is new and the buckle marked with the Rolex crown logo.
