HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number between the bottom lugs, which is rubbed but legible, we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1959. The inside of the case back is also stamped 11 59.
CONDITION
An awful lot of people who look for a Birth Year Watch want a Rolex, but this has supply and demand issues. If you want a 1959 Submariner, or GMT, you might have to start your budget at £50,000, as there simply are more people that want one now than bought one then. The Datejust has been a staple of the Rolex range since 1945 for good reason – it is perpetually popular. It makes this 1959 Rolex Datejust a great choice.
This Datejust has the 25 jewel Rolex 1066 movement inside, the same movement found in the Explorer of the same period (treble your Datejust budget for an Explorer though!). On the downside the dial does have slight patina, but this is even and not bad at all. The dial has an applied logo, which Rolex did use on some watches in the 1950’s before dropping it for the printed, slimmer logo we recognise today. These applied logo watches are in demand, as it shows the originality. What is not original to this watch is the Oyster bracelet. It is a Rolex item, stamped 558 on the lugs and 78360 on the clasp, but this is a solid link bracelet and later than the watch head.
