A nice, clean Certina 9k gold watch, with sub seconds dial.  Never engraved.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

From the London hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1959.

CONDITION

The first thing we look for in gold watches from the 1950’s is the condition of the dial.  Many people smoked (61-75% of the population, dependent on which study to you read), and smoke has a habit of damaging the dial of a watch, especially near the crown.  But this watch has a very clean dial, with applied markers that are also likely to be gold.  The case is by DS&S, who also made cases for Rolex among others.  This was because the import duty on gold watches was very steep, so people imported the movements and the manufacturers had cases made in England by DS&S, Denisson and others to avoid the import duty.  Like the dial the case is clean and free from damage.  The hand winding Certina 23-20 movement is all working well, and the original crown is still present (although the plating on this is worn).  We have fitted a new leather strap with gold tone buckle.

This watch will be supplied with our Certificate of Authenticity.
