HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the London hall mark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1958.
CONDITION
Rotary are still one of the top providers of watches in the UK (Sekonda are the most popular by volume.) Some people believe they are a British company, but the roots are all Swiss. Founded in 1895, it wasn’t until the 1920’s that they started importing watches to the UK. The case on this watch is stamped SD, for Sylvain Dreyfuss, one of Rotary’s founders who went on to make the cases while his Brother rand the watch business. It is this family name of Dreyfuss that now adorns the Swiss made higher end Rotary watches.
This is quite typical of the watches Rotary were selling in the 1950’s. The case is all 9k gold, and what is slightly unusual is the lugs are 18mm rather than 16mm which might be more commonplace. That does open up the number of different straps you can have, as 18mm is more of a standard size today, and they can be swapped easily thanks to the drilled lugs. Inside there is a pleasant surprise of a Peseux 320 movement, and Peseux movements are generally classed as the better end of movement suppliers. The dial has patina evenly across it, as shown in the photos and videos. The case has a dent on the non crown side which has caused a small crack to the case. The pigskin leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred.
