A classic gold presentation dress watch from Longines, when they were at the peak of their game. Model reference 13322.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number Birmingham hallmark on the inside of the case back we can see this was assayed in 1957. The serial number on the movement shows it was made in very early 1958, so the movement and case couldn’t be put together until 1958. The paperwork has a different serial number to the watch, but the paperwork is made out to a Mr Tombs, and the same name appears on the case back too, so maybe this was an administrative error. The paperwork also shows a date of October 1958.
CONDITION
The fifties and sixties were the best of times for Longines. They were held in very high regard, probably higher than Omega at the time, and their importer Baume also was the importer for Vacheron & Constantin, so they were in fine company. This watch uses their lovely 12.68ZS manual wind calibre, which is working well. The crown looks to have been changed at some point and the plating is missing on the crown. The gold case has a slight dent in the case back which isn’t affecting anything, and the case was made by Dennison. Dennison cases were often used to legally avoid the high import duty by many makers. The dial is original but does have some patina. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. The Longines gold plated buckle was transferred to the new strap, but it is quite worn on the plating. The box clasp doesn’t work and there is something loose in the box that rattles (possibly part of the catch), but that is quite minor.
