HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the inscription on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being in 1957. This model was in production between 1953-1954, but 1957 does seem the most logical for a birth year watch given the inscription.
CONDITION
Most Hamilton watches of this period were 10k rolled gold. Rolled gold is a thin layer of gold, making up at least 5% of the watch case weight, but while this is better than gold plate it can still wear. The Brockton model was only available in 10k solid gold, so it is the one to look for.
The dial is outstanding. All original, and very clean for a 60+ year old watch. The inscription on the outside is for fifteen years good service, and is nicely done. The watch is small for a men’s watch by modern standards, but right for period and could now be worn by men or women easily. The movement is a calibre 770, which is the higher grade choice for this watch – the calibre 754 was also an option, but that only has 19 jewels and the 770 has 22 jewels and is finished better – the striped bridges are something only the watchmaker would have seen, but they still did it. Lever Brothers certainly appreciated Leo L. Antola’s work. The strap is new, as is the crystal which we managed to find a NOS replacement for.
