A watch that was only made for one year, in Great Britain, and on the original bracelet, this ladies Smiths Empire is one to grab.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This model was only ever made in 1956, and we have included a photo of this watch next to the 1956 catalogue image in Barrie Smith’s excellent book Smiths Watches – A Reference Guide
CONDITION
We bought this on the basis that the condition was good, before we realised that the model Y704 was only made of one year. So that is an indication that this watch is in very good order! The chromium plated expanding bracelet is good, with just one link having lost its springiness. There are of course signs of wear, but they are forgivable given the age of the watch. The case sides are very straight, and are brushed rather than plated. The Empire range was Smiths entry level watch, and remain extremely popular today. The dial is slightly patinaed, possibly by smoke damage, but is easy to read and nice to have a sub seconds dial on an old watch too. The blued hands are really nice, and original.
