We are not certain what the De Luxe model had over the standard Avia gold watch, but this is the Avia De Luxe!
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the Edinburgh hall mark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1956.
CONDITION
Avia watches of this period can not be compared to the more modern watches of the same name, as these were far better quality than anything built after 1980. The 9k gold case was made by BWC – British Watch Corporation, and is a good size for the time while still be slim. The back has never been engraved. The lugs are a standard 18mm, when a lot of watches of the time were 17mm, and they are also drilled to facilitate easy strap changes. The movement is a Peseux 320, a 17 jewel hand wind movement that is possibly this is called the De Luxe – most hand wind movements were 15 jewels. Peseux always made nice movements, and this is finished in copper plating, just for the watchmaker. The dial is all original with applied hour markers and logo rather than the cheaper option of printing these. There is a dent on the dial near 12, and a small mark under 1. The watch wears larger than the dimensions suggest due to the dial taking up nearly all of the case. The leather strap is new.
