One of the rarer Rolex models from the 1950’s. Model reference 6480
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number between the lugs we know the case was made towards the end of 1954, but the caseback was made in the third quarter of 1955, so we can accurately date this watch to being completed in 1955.
CONDITION
Rolex launched some impressive watches in the 1950’s – think Explorer, Submariner, GMT, DayDate, Milgauss and lady’s Datejust between 1953 and 1957 alone. So it is understandable that the discrete Oyster 6480 didn’t make many headlines – in this article on Hodinkee they list it as one of the three less common vintage Rolex watches still available under $10,000 (although the link to the 6480 listed is now dead).
So with an Oyster 6480 what do you get? It is not an Oyster Perpetual, so no automatic winding – there is a manual wind calibre 1210 movement inside this watch, just how it should be. This means the case is thinner and the watch site closer to the wrist. There is no calendar either, so the Cyclops that divides watch collectors isn’t on the crystal. The Oyster case has the screw down crown still, and on this example it is the rarer and therefore original + crown. This was not used for long, and was to signify that this is a Brevet (patent applied for ) watch – the word BREVET + appears between the top lugs with the model number, so everything ties in together. The dial has simple stick hour markers, and dagger hands that have lost their lume over the years. The all stainless steel case is a good size, and has a few marks but nothing terrible. The strap is new and fitted with a branded buckle, but this might not be original to the watch.
This Rolex is for the people that admire the watchmaker, but doesn’t want anything flash.
