A very nice 1955 Lord Elgin watch with the manual wind 21 jewel calibre 670 movement inside, and expandable bracelet.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1955.
CONDITION
Starting in the mid to late 1930s, Elgin introduced a new line of wrist watches called Lord Elgin. They were designed to compete with other manufacturers whose watches were perceived as “premium”. They are a step up from the regular Elgins in a couple of respects:
* They were almost always fitted with 21-jewel movements rather than 17 and occasionally 19-jewel movements for the regular Elgins.
* Gold-filled cased Lord Elgins were usually had gold-filed tops and backs, compared with stainless or base metal backs for plain Elgins.
This example has survived incredibly well. The dial is not quite bright white anymore, but the domed crystal is excellent and the case shows no marks either. Both the case and the dial have unusual features. The scalloped hooded lugs on the case stand out, as do the cut out numerals at 3 and 9. Neither of these features show in Bruce Shawkey’s excellent book on Elgin, so must be quite rare to find. The Spediel bracelet is probably a later replacement, but could be swapped for a leather strap if you prefer.
This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
