The Maximus models from Rotary are always popular, and this solid gold one is in very good order.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the London hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1955. But the (beautifully done) inscription on the case back is for 1958. While either year could be considered to be valid for a birth year watch the 1958 one is more obvious.
CONDITION
The 9k gold case is made by DS&S – David Shackman and Sons. This is a good thing – you will find the DS&S makers marks in gold watches from Rolex, Longines, Omega and others from this period. The good news continues with the movement. This Maximus is fitted with a Revue 77SC, a 15 jewel manual wind of good quality, which is clean and working well. The dial is very clean for the age – in a period where many people smoked and watch cases were not generally water or air tight, many dial were ruined. This is beautiful, and the dauphine hands are not tarnished either. Even the acrylic crystal didn’t need changing. The turned bombe lugs on this watch are very nice, and they have conventional springbars so choosing a different strap is easy if you want to. This would have been a nice watch to get for 25 years hard work.
