This Omega Seamaster Calendar has an awful lot going for it. Vintage automatic watches from this period with date are difficult to find.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the in house movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1954.
CONDITION
If you are not familiar with bumper automatics, they were a quite short lived development. Instead of spinning 360 degrees, the oscillating weight in the movement bounces from side to side, hence the moniker bumper. They are a nice piece of horological history, but eventually the full spinning rotor won the race as it simply wound the watch easier. Omega fitted the calibre 355 in this watch, with swan neck fine adjustment and 17 jewels, in this model CK2757, and this is still working very well. The press on case back is signed Omega on the inside and Seamaster on the outside, and was originally water resistant to 30 metres. The crown is original, and the acrylic crystal is also signed with the Omega symbol on the centre. The magnification bubble for the date is on the inside of the crystal. The dial, with a mix of numbers, arrowhead hour markers and a crosshair design is original and unrestored, but does have a couple of small marks. The all stainless steel case isn’t bad, but the lugs have been polished to a matte finish. The pigskin strap is used but can be swapped for a different strap if preferred. We have found a slightly earlier 1953 watch that sold at the Antiquorum Omegamania sale in 2007. That made CHF 2,832 – that was roughly £1,200 over a decade ago.
