This Bulova Snorkel has what was described as a ‘water tite’ case, which has kept it looking good.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the production date code on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1954.
CONDITION
You might be thinking that Snorkel would suit a divers watch better than a dress watch, and Bulova would agree – the later models were what we would recognise as divers watches today. But the earlier ones, like this, look like a conventional watch. Why might this be? Well three watches launched in 1953, just months before this model was made, all had rotating bezels and changed the look of divers watches forever (Zodiac Sea-Wolf, Blancpain 50 Fathoms and Rolex’s Submariner were the three.) When compared to other watches you can see how original this Snorkel model is, right down to the red second hand. The main hands are very good, and the radium lume clean and complete. The movement is the Bulova 10 BUC, a 17 jewel hand wound item that is working well. It is nice to see the original signed crown still fitted after all these years. The case is 10k rolled gold plate, which is thicker than standard plating and it has stood up well, despite a few marks. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
