A very nice looking, Art Deco 43mm pocket watch from Molnija (Молния if you speak Russian)
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in the second quarter of 1953.
CONDITION
The Molnija clock and watch factory opened on November 17, 1947. The company’s main customer was then the Soviet Union Department of Defense, providing them with wristwatches, pocket watches and table clocks. Unique clocks were also produced specifically for use in Soviet tanks, fighter aircraft, submarines and, eventually, spacecraft.
This is a pocket watch which is very stylish, but the chromed case always limits the prices of these. So if you are looking for a good movement and a very chic dial but don’t want to break the back then this is the one for you. The 15 jewel movement is running well enough, and is based on a Cortebert design for calibre 618. If you are going to copy a movement, you may as well use the one Rolex selected to put in some Panerai dive watches. There is one screw missing on the winding bridge but this is not affecting any of the workings on the watch, and the screw is not still in the movement. This pocket watch comes with a chromed metal chain, which is not in great condition but came with the watch so may be original. The case back has a strong Art Deco look too, and we wonder if the symbols shown are supposed to represent buildings in Moscow?
