A manual winding Certina in solid gold from 1953, complete with box and papers – this one features the earlier cursive logo too.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

We know that the gold case was assayed in Edinburgh in 1951, but the sales paperwork states that this watch was sold in 1953.  The Certina logo on the dial changed to a different logo in 1954, so everything ties together nicely.

CONDITION

Like most watches of this period, in order to avoid the very high tax on gold watches being imported the case was made in England and the movement provided by the Swiss.  This has a BWC case, made in London, and is quite thick.  This isn’t surprising, as the receipt from Watches of Switzerland is for £22.10.6, which is over £600 in today’s money when you allow for inflation.

The dial is not perfect but good and original, with applied numerals on every hour.  The watch winds and sets nicely, and the in house Certina 400 movement is running sweetly.  The case doesn’t have any dinks, and the beveled lugs are still evident.  the case back has never been engraved.  We have fitted a new leather strap.

This watch will be supplied with the original presentation box, papers and our Certificate of Authenticity.
