HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can date this watch to being made in 1951. The Seamaster calendar was launched in 1952, so this watch could have been made ready for the launch.
CONDITION
A bumper automatic is an automatic winding watch where the oscillating weight goes through an arc of about 270 degrees before bouncing off a spring and going back the opposite way. Most automatics the weight spins freely the fully 360 degrees, which is not only more efficient but you don’t feel the ‘bump’ as the weight hits the spring. There are no more bumper automatics made, as they are just not as good for winding the watches, so there were unique to their time. With all older automatics it is often good to wind them manually to start them going and give them some reserve, leaving the auto mechanism to top up the wind during the day. This watch has the calibre 353, and this Seamaster Calendar was the first Omega watch to feature a date window. Having the date window at 6 give the dial a nice balance, and this square date window is also proof of early construction – by 1953 the shape had changed to trapezoidal. This watch has a good stainless steel case, with nice lugs, and the case has not been polished. There are a few marks, most noticeably on the non crown side of the case, but they are just cosmetic. The dial has some patina, but the sword hands and arrowhead hour markers are good. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
