A good sized 18k gold men’s Omega with the calibre 342 bumper automatic movement is always a nice find.  Model 2659.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1951.

CONDITION

The bumper automatic movement was a development that has since been replaced by the full rotor automatic.  Instead of rotating 360 degrees like conventional automatics, bumper automatic movements swing around 290 degrees before bouncing off a spring to go in the opposite direction.  You can feel the ‘bump’ when wearing the watch – it isn’t distracting, but you can feel it and they are now sought after by collectors.  None more so than Omega’s.

This example is in a 34 mm 18k gold case that was made by Omega and hallmarked in Switzerland.  If it was 9k gold then the case would have probably been made in the UK, and 14k would have been in the US, but this is higher standard.  The case and lugs do have dents, clearly shown in the photographs.  The dial also has marks, which is what you would expect of a watch this age that is in a dress case with a clip on back.  The calibre 342 movement is running sweetly.
