A smaller Eterna-Matic in a stainless steel case, this would originally have been a men’s watch but the size is now considered unisex.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1951.
CONDITION
Men used to wear smaller watches, but as fashions change they were somewhat left behind – a few years ago when new watches were often 48mm these vintage ones looked tiny! But now as fashions change again the 48mm looks out of place and uncomfortable, but the smaller cases are returning to popularity. This example features the Eterna patented five ball bearing rotor, which reduces friction and wear and was invented by Eterna in 1948. That is why the word Brevette (French for patent) is stamped onto the calibre 1248TU movement. Like a lot of earlier autos, it is often better to hand wind them initially and then let the automatic top the power up rather than rely on the automatic alone. The stainless steel case is good, with the extra benefit of the screw down case back. The dial has applied golden hour marker s to match the hands, and is overall pretty good. The lume plots on the hours and the lume in the hands has been checked with out geigercounter and is not radium. The vegan strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
