HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1950.
CONDITION
A bumper automatic is an early design where the oscillating weight swings in a arc of approximately 300 degrees before hitting a coil spring and bouncing back in the opposite direction. Many brands used them, but they were short lived as the full rotor automatics are far more efficient. But a bumper does remind you of the technology when you feel or hear the rotor hitting a spring.
This watch has a Hadsworth 14k gold filled case, with screw down case back and a US market reference number. The case back is secured via a steel ring to increase water resistance. There is some wear to the case gold, as shown in the photographs. The calibre 351 movement is working away nicely, but we always recommend treating bumper automatics as a manual wind watch that the auto works help keep running for longer, and not to rely on the automatic winding alone. The dial is nice, with relumed plots at 12, 3, 6 and 9. There is no radium detected on this dial. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown and buckle, but the buckle may be a modern part.
