With the original black dial, this gold capped watch was the high end of the newly launched Omega Seamaster range. Model reference 2577-7.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1949. The Seamaster range was launched in 1948, and the non chronometer version of this reference 2577 watch features in the Omega: A Journey through Time book.
CONDITION
The watch features Omega’s calibre 352, which was an upgraded 28.10. This movement includes bumper automatic mechanism, and an excenter regulator for precise timekeeping. Mainly you find these in Constellation models, and you rarely find a Seamaster that was chronometer rated back then. The dial is unusual too in being black – most were silver, and black dials are often the result of the refinishers work. But this dial has the radium lume pips and hands, as well as the chronometer text that matches the movement. The hands do have some holes in the lume. The case is rose gold capped on top of steel, and wears well. The screw down case back would have helped keep this watch waterproof in 1949, hence the Seamaster name. The crown is the original hex crown, but has lost the gold capping to the end which is probably the worst cosmetic damage on the watch altogether. This configuration of reference 2577 is quite scarce – of the 45 models listed on Chrono24 at time of press, only three were chronometer specification and none of those had the black dial. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
