This Audax doesn’t only have the box and a Dennison Aquatite case, but also a letter confirming the watch history from the first owner!
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Very unusually we have a letter of provenance accompanying the watch, stating the was given to him, the first owner when he headed off to Dover College. This fits in with the technical information we have about the case and movement, as well as the styling, so we have no doubts that this was purchased in 1949.
CONDITION
This post war Audax watch has lived a life, as documented by the letter, but it wears its story well. The base metal case, just like the military watches towards the end of the war were, is not too badly rubbed and the dial has the correct amount of patina to show it is original. These Aquatite cases were widely used in some of the early waterproof watches, including watches by Smiths and JW Benson. The hands may have been relumed at some point – the dial is showing signs of some radium but not as much as if the hands were radium too. The manual wind movement is signed Audax and is running well. The tan leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. We picked the colour as it is also mentioned in the letter that the watch originally came on a tan leather strap.
