A ladies solid gold Rolex, reference 4327, dating from the late 1940’s with sporty styling.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1948.
CONDITION
Most Rolex watches are exclusive but not uncommon – at time of writing there are 38,500 Rolex watches listed on eBay. But there is only one of those with this case reference 4327, and non listed in the previous three months. Initially when we see a Rolex model we don’t recognise we worry that it might not be real, but our research shows this model in the Rolex reference book 3621 Rolex watches, and we also found this one listed at a prestigious auction house last year with a guide price of £1,500-£2,300. Both examples have slightly different features, but the case and movement is consistent so we are completely happy that this watch is original.
The 14k gold case would indicate that this watch was made for the US market – European watches tended to be 18k, and the British market made do with 9k. The milled bezel is fixed, and aligned so that each marker on the bezel is in line with the hour. The bezel has a patina that can be cleaned off if required, but can never be recreated – we have left it, as some of our customers like old watches to look like old watches. The case back has never been engraved. The straight lugs are drilled just on the non crown side to make strap changing easier. The dial is aged but original, and we have taken photos of the dial without the case and glass to show the full picture. The hand winding movement, with the superbalance markings as well as Rolex, 17 jewels, is also adjusted to two positions and will be serviced fully before the watch is sent out. The leather strap is new.
