This manual wind Tissot Aquasport is an unusual model for the time, when most wristwatches were intended for military use.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1942.
CONDITION
Aquasport. The name brings up images of scuba diving or waterskiing, but three years into the second world war few people could enjoy such freedoms. It isn’t as if the name was a carry over from pre war days – Tissot registered the trademark in December 1939. However, in line with other sub brands like Camping the name brings a comforting thought during dark times.
The patina on the dial is clear to see, and will appeal to as many (if not more) people than it will put off. The dial may have some dirt, but the movement is very clean and all working well. The movement is the Tissot 27.3, which is notable for the use of anti shock protection on the balance at a time where this was not commonplace. It also has the original metal movement spacer. The case has been strapped to its components and cleaned. The case does have some wear and tear, and that includes a slightly bent lug, but as the watch is nearly eighty years old and was made during WW2 we can forgive this. The acrylic crystal is new. The leather strap is also new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred (or a NATO style strap, as shown in the video).
