A rare survivor, this Rotary Super Sports men’s 9k gold watch has in a inner protective case to also be non magnetic.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the Birmingham hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1939.
CONDITION
Watches in nice condition from the 1930’s are rare. That is not mainly because of the second world war, but the UK’s Great Depression was an economic slump that affected the nation between 1929 and 1939. Add onto this the smoke in the air from coal fires and cigarettes and non waterproof cases, and the watches didn’t generally have shock protection on the balance, and it helps to understand that watches from this era were prized possessions.
This Rotary Super Sports is fitted into a Dennison hinged gold case, in the cushion style. The case has fixed lugs and a couple of small dents, but is otherwise good and has never been inscribed. The original dial is clean for the period, but not perfect. All the applied hour markers are in place. Unusually the movement is also housed in a non magnetic shell, which has no doubt helped protect not only from magnetism but also dust and debris. The strap is lightly used, but better quality than the modern ones. There is a similar cased watch on Rotary’s own museum website, but this Super Sports is in better condition than theirs!
