HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the Birmingham hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1938.
CONDITION
Marvin started making watches in 1850, and are still going now (although it looks like all of the products are out of stock on their website – the brand was reborn in 2009). You can read a brief history of the company on their website here. The watch we have is perfectly designed for the late art deco period – clear numbers, clean design and even the sub seconds dial is squared off to match the case. It is is a slim watch by modern standards, but correct for the time – men wore smaller watches. The case has fixed bars, but the leather strap is quality and nearly new. The case is in good shape, with no dents, and was made by Dennison. It has a hinged case back and does not look to have ever been engraved. The manual wind movement is a Marvin calibre 610, which has 616 jewel and 3 adjustments. Some of the jewel are held in with golden chantons – a high specification feature showing that this Marvin was designed to be a high quality timepiece. The dial is all original, with the light patina you would expect, and the blued hands look great against it.
