This solid gold men’s pocket watch is from esteemed jewellers J.W. Benson, and still has the original fitted case.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the London hallmark on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1932.
CONDITION
During the second world war the factory for J.W. Benson was bombed, and after the war they didn’t make their own watches any more. It is one of the reasons that pre war J.W. Benson watches are so sought after, that and the outright quality they always produced. This open face men’s pocket watch is a credit to them, and you can see why they had held the Royal warrant for so many heads of state, including Queen Victoria.
The case is pretty straight, with just slight dips on the case back. The hinge and bow are stiff, just as they would have been when they left the factory. The onion crown is used to wind and set the movement, which is a Swiss Cyma 939 which is running well. The dial is very good, with no cracks, and the blued spade hands are very straight. The watch comes not only with the case but also the suede watch cover. The only slight negative is the glass, which has been replaced with an acrylic item that has a small chip and an imperfection in the crystal. This can easily be changed and low dome glass crystals are £25.
This watch will be supplied with the original presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
