An early ladies J W Benson gold watch with guiloche dial and Breguet hands, running very well indeed.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the Glasgow import hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being imported and assayed in 1930. It is possible the watch was made earlier, and then imported.
CONDITION
Watches this early don’t always survive, but the best that have been looked after will happily still run and keep good time. So the best thing to do is start with a quality watch. J W Benson were suppliers to Queens Victoria, HRH Prince of Wales, the Tsar of Russia and several other Royal households, so when they put their name on something it is good. The case is stamped JWB, and the hinged back still shuts crisply and as nicely as the day it was made. Inside that case is an ETA 15 jewel hand winding movement from the 500 calibre series, so the movement is decent too and the fact it still runs for 30 hours and keeps good time is testament to the quality. The dial does have patina, but is still easy to read and the bracelet is probably later, as it is from Gemex in America and is 1/12th gold filled. You could also wear this watch on a leather strap if preferred.
This watch will be supplied with a presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
