HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the hall mark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1930.
CONDITION
J.W. Benson was a highly respected watchmaker. They supplied watches to Queen Victoria among other notable VVIP’s and ran their retail premises from Old Bond Street in London and their workshops at the back of Ludgate Hill in the City. However these workshops were bombed in WW2, and from then on the company was never quite the same. They still offered good watches, but didn’t make them in house any more. This being a pre war watch would have been made in London, as stated on the dial, but they chose to use a Swiss movement. The movement is a Cyma 234, in top spec 15 jewel form, and it is running well. The case is stamped JWB as it should be, and is hinged front and rear. One sign of quality is just how thick the lugs are. The case is also very large for the time, and can easily be worn today without looking too small. The dial is very good, with no cracks, and the intricate blued hands are straight and true. The glass has just a few minor marks. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
This is tremendous value for money. The cheapest new 9k gold watch we can find is a quartz Accurist at £849, which just is not going to compare to a vintage J.W. Benson in the flesh.
