In a sterling silver Dennison case, this Limit pocket watch has a sterile dial and is working well.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the Birmingham hallmarks on the case and dust cover we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1922. The crown pendent tube is hallmarked 1921, but the watch could not have been completed until 1922.
CONDITION
Limit were quite a young company when this pocket watch was made, having been established in 1912. This is probably why their name doesn’t appear on the dial – it wouldn’t have much brand recognition anyway. Bu the movement is stamped LIMIT and SWISS MADE, so we know who made that. The case is by one of the most established case makers in England. Dennison made cases for a variety of companies and are very respected. The Swiss movement and the case made in Birmingham would have been combined in Limit’s factory in Saddleworth near Oldham, where nearly 500 people worked in the 1920’s. It was quite normal for this style of piecework to happen, each factory specialising one key skill set before being assembled. The watch had a couple of dents on the case and on the dust cover, but is otherwise good. The cartouche on the rear of the case is blank, having never been engraved. The movement is ticking away nicely and will keep good time for more than 24 hours easily. The bow is perfectly tensioned. The glass does have scratches and marks, and the hands are not perfectly straight, but this is quite minor given the age of the watch.
