HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1918.
CONDITION
Waltham, from Waltham, Massachusetts, were prolific watch makers in the earlier half of the 20th century. Not only did they make a lot of watches, but they made good watches too. This is a full hunter, which means a metal cover has to be popped open by pressing the crown in to reveal the dial. The front cover was designed to protect the watch glass and dial during hunting, hence the name. It is always worth looking for the best one available with pocket watches, and we have done well here. The dial is close to perfect, as are the blued hands. The case is showing little sign of wear, despite being 100+ years old, and the shield on the front cover has never been engraved. It was made by Philadelphia Watch Case Co. and carried a 20 year guarantee. It is not marked for gold, rolled gold or gold plate but it must be one – there are no hallmarks, and the guarantee implies it is rolled or plated gold. A lot of American watches were rolled gold, but we are listing this as the thinner gold plate as we can not prove what method was used. The fifteen jewel movement is running well and has been tested in several positions – worn balance staffs are expensive to replace and if they are worn then the watch might run well in one position, and maybe not at all in another. The movement is nicely decorated and star shaped regulator called a Church 1892.
