With a dial signed for Wm Greenwood of Leeds and Huddersfield, this Waltham would have been made to order for them.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1917.
CONDITION
William Greenwood & Sons were silversmiths by trade, but they would have commissioned this watch to be made for them to retail in their stores and therefore the dial carries their name. They chose a good Waltham 620 grade 15 jewel manual wind movement, complete with a Church 1892 regulator instead of a standard lever which is still working well. For the case they selected Dennison, and their moon standard case which was guaranteed not to show wear for 20 years. That was achieved by having two layers of gold sandwiching a composition layer, making the case strong but still affordable without the cost of solid gold. Even after a century the case doesn’t show much wear at all. The dial does have a small crack near twelve, but the blued leaf hands are very good and the acrylic glass is new. Above the sub second dial is the words ‘Maker to the Admiralty’ to promote they were doing their bit during WW1 and unusually the words SWISS MADE DIAL appear above 12. The dust cover is crudely but lightly engraved E.KAYE PRUDENTIAL, so maybe the man from the Pru’ used to own this watch?

From 1st September 2021 we will be planting a tree for every watch we sell, working with the International Tree Foundation (Est 1922) to make this business positive on carbon. By buying anything pre owned you are effectively reusing what already exists, but this takes it further and makes us feel good.
