c1977 Certina ‘222’ quartz watch

A vintage Certina quartz model that clearly took inspiration from the Vacheron Constantin 222 model of the same year.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

Both the Vacheron Constantin 222 and the ETA based Certina 750 movement found in this watch were both launched in 1977.  Given the quick progression of quartz movements of this period, with new models out almost annually, this watch must have been made circa 1977.

CONDITION

Vacheron Constantin launched the 222 in 1977 to celebrate 222 years of watch production.  The watch closely resembled the style of both the Genta designed Audermars Piguet Royal Oak (launched 1972) and Patek Philippe Nautilus (1976) with the angular design, distinctive bezel and integrated bracelet.  Not everyone has these sorts of funds, so Certina and others took some of the styling clues and made the watches cheaper.  So out go super slim automatic movements in favour of Quartz, and the 18k links and bezel become gold plated.  On the Certina the bracelet is not integrated, so can be swapped for a leather strap if preferred.

This particular example is original and in very good condition.  The black dial is excellent, and we have taken a picture of the watch without the bezel and glass fitted to show just how nice it is.  The  glass is new.  The bracelet is original and a good length, but does have the initials A_H deeply engraved on the clasp.  The movement, with quickset date, is running sweetly.
